Thursday Opening Keynote: John Watson, Digital Learning Collaborative
Lessons from Next Door
John Watson is the Evergreen Education Group’s founder and primary researcher. Evergreen also organizes the Digital Learning Annual Conference, which focuses on K-12 digital learning in the US and Canada.
John is responsible for conducting, writing, and presenting research as well as providing testimony on digital learning matters to state boards of education, legislatures, and charter school commissions. He has extensive knowledge and experience based on his two decades working in online learning and education technology. This background has afforded him a wide-reaching network across the spectrum of education professionals, policymakers, and subject matter experts as well as the ability to provide insightful, dimensional analysis and recommendations.
John’s opening remarks will focus on the phases of the response to the pandemic in US schools from spring until now, and looking towards the new school year. After a 20 minute presentation, he will be joined by CANeLearn leaders to discuss comparisons between the U.S. and Canada, and open the discussion to comments and questions from attendees.
Thursday Closing Keynote: Derek Wenmoth, New Zealand
Lessons from Lockdown Down Under
Derek Wenmoth, co-founder of CORE Educationand currently running the FutureMakers educational consultancy, is regarded as one of NZ education’s foremost future focused thinkers.
Derek works extensively with K-12 schools and systems and is regularly asked to consult with policy makers and government agencies regarding the future directions of NZ educational policy and practice.
Derek has a long history of experience in distance education having started NZ’s first fully distance initial teacher education programme in 1994, and was instrumental in the conceptualisation and establishment of their Virtual Learning Network, which operates in a similar way to the eLearning Consortia across Canada.
In his keynote on Thursday afternoon Derek will provide an overview of the NZ response to the lockdown, describing the measures taken to support schools, teachers, learners and their families, and draw out some of the lessons learned from this.
