Welcome to the June CANeLearn News.

As the warmth of the summer break gets into full swing, and you look forward to soaking up some sun, below are some upcoming events to mark on your calendars with a brief update on e-learning across the country.  Finally, some interesting resources on AI to explore over the summer.

CANeLearn is partnering with the Ontario eLearning Consortium to support its two BOLTT conferences, both hybrid events next year, with BOLTT Toronto held November 14-16 and BOLTT Ottawa May 8-9.  BOLTT Toronto is a premier event for educators across Canada.  Mark November 14-16 now – more details will be released in August.

In BC, CANeLearn is partnering once again with the BCEDL for the annual Digital Learning Symposium, this year with a fall and spring event (October 20 online only, April 24-26 onsite at the Coast Coal Harbour, Vancouver, portions available online.

Both the November BOLTT and April DLsymp events will gather the pinnacle of research and activities from across Canada, of interest to all educators.

e-Learning Cross Canada Update

1. In Atlantic Canada, Newfoundland/Labrador implemented free online tutoring for online and classroom-based students. At the same time, Nova Scotia’s $10-million EdTech Refresh Plan supports student access to tools such as Chromebooks and iPads, plus additional support for the Nova Scotia Virtual School.
2. In Québec, CANeLearn is continuing its study of the impact of LEARN’s free online tutoring program, available to all anglophone students in the province, expanding the focus from parent views to those of students while cross-referencing student success with year-end provincial exam results.
3. Ontario’s mandatory two online (e-learning) credit requirements, which began for students entering Grade 9 in the 2020-21 school year, will apply to adult learners starting this upcoming school year (like all students, they can opt out).  The renewed focus on e-learning in the province has seen OeLC’s public memberships expand to 55 boards as programs continue to grow.
4. Manitoba Remote Learning Centre closed its operations this June while students continued to have options through their school to access web-based course materials.
5. Saskatchewan’s SaskDLC officially launches in September, centralizing the provision of online courses throughout the province, while Alberta continues with its decentralized online learning options with a listing of online program options. The Yukon and Northwest Territories continue to build their own programs, supplementing with southern provincial online courses and programs where needed.
6. Finally, in British Columbia, online learning program activities will be increasing with the formal launch of public and independent schools.
