Welcome to the June CANeLearn News
As the sun sets on another school year, and we look forward to soaking up some sun, CANeLearn continues its research agenda on e-learning with a survey on supports for students launching this Fall – see details below.
Help us fine-tune our focus as we move into Phase 2 of the DLAC survey. The completion deadline is June 30. See more below or click here for the survey.

Research Updates
CANeLearn’s annual K-12 eLearning Program Survey informs the State of the Nation, providing the context for research specific to Canada.
Please take a few minutes to help us shape the future of e-learning in Canada.

Congratulations to TUC College of Education and Health Sciences, Dr. Michael Barbour, on being named a 2024 Top Scholar by ScholarGPS! 🏆
This honour places him in the top 0.5% of scholars worldwide for his strong publication record, impact, and quality of his scholarly contributions and work.
Join us in celebrating this remarkable achievement of a CANeLearn lifetime member and founder.
CANeLearn Research: Join Us!
CANeLearn is conducting research in October and November (new dates) and looking for your help. Online programs from across Canada will be selected to study the supports provided for online learning students. Online schools and programs will choose a specific population of students (e.g., marginal students, Indigenous learners, at-risk students, adult learners, etc.), ideally a different population of students per program. Researchers will explore what types of support are available to students, what students are aware of, and what types of support they actually use.
Contact Randy LaBonte or Michael Barbour for more information or to indicate your interest.
LEARN’s AI in Education website, developed in partnership with CANeLearn, is available in a redesigned and further developed format for our network. Check it out here!!

E-Learning Supports
CANeLearn is designing new research examining supports for marginal, at-risk, and adult learners in online learning environments.

DLAC Digital Learning Research Agenda – Phase 2 June 30 deadline
By Michael K. Barbour on June 11, 2025
Over the last year, a team of researchers met with, listened to, and surveyed teachers and leaders to obtain feedback on what topics and areas practitioners want more research on. These consultations have resulted in the first draft of the DLAC – The Community Advancing Digital Learning’s Bridging the Gap Between Research and Practice: A DLAC Research Agenda – Phase 1. The Research Agenda Phase 1 outlines the persistent gap between educational research and classroom practice in K-12 digital learning, citing barriers such as inaccessible journals, rigid scholarly formats, and prioritization of immediate problem-solving over long-term research integration. These challenges are compounded by time constraints, lack of leadership support, and limited professional development opportunities for teachers. DLAC responded by convening researchers and practitioners to develop a focused agenda through focus groups and a global survey, aiming to address 10 critical themes such as learning structure, modalities, assessment, and emerging technologies, fostering collaboration between researchers and educators to bridge this divide.
Let us know how important each of the areas in the report are to you by completing this quick survey:

This will help us to fine-tune our focus as we move into Phase 2 (and provide a more international perspective to the research agenda).
Feel free to share this survey with others involved in distance learning in the primary and secondary environments. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at mkbarbour-at-gmail-dot-com
Thank you in advance for completing this survey.
