Research Updates
- Program Leaders: please complete our program survey to update our State of the Nation research. This data complements what the study collects from jurisdictional ministries and enables cross-referencing, trend identification, and sharing of effective, quality online practices. Add your year-end data to improve the renowned study.
- CANeLearn’s Critical Supports Study continues to collect data on what types of support are provided for online students, what support they are aware of, and what support they actually use. Check out ongoing publications of this research on CANeLearn’s research projects page.
- Our partnership with the State of the Nation: K-12 E-Learning in Canada annual report continues. Find out more on the State of the Nation website, and the latest from the CIDER/CANeLearn May presentation.
Conversations with our Grandchildren: Spitballing from the Balcony
A new series of blog posts and podcasts featuring our team of Grandfathers Michael Canuel and Randy LaBonte. Conversations with our grandchildren: Spitballing from the balcony (no, not wads of paper off a balcony, just ideas about K-12 education).

Add a post or two to your summer reading list!
- AI in Education: What to expect next – “Of course, we all know nothing is being done except in isolated schools. We never really taught critical thinking in our schools, and we are not in any position to start now.”
- Teaching to the test – “We’re not against assessment. We’re against assessing things that don’t matter.“
- Why is Teaching Time Being Lost to Classroom Management? – “The fall 2025 edition of Parachute quantifies a teacher’s day in a significant way: 25% of their teaching time is consumed by classroom management.“
- AI power and water – “Now the very institutions that could protect us may be the source of the problem”.

CANeLearn Governance
To better serve the needs of the K-12 online learning community, our organization has streamlined its governance structure, transitioning from an advisory board of directors to a more effective operational board of three directors. September’s elected board voted to create a new Advisory Council (terms of reference), allowing the education leaders formerly on our board to maintain a strategic relationship with the organization, providing expertise and insight, while stepping back from direct operational and governance responsibilities. This strategic reorganization ensures timely and effective decision-making while continuing to leverage the collective wisdom of our online learning community to drive CANeLearn’s mission forward.
Add your voice to CANeLearn’s direction. Connect with Advisory Council members, or CANeLearn executive board members Randy LaBonte, Michael Canuel, or Michael Barbour. Join us at the CANeLearn AGM, online via Zoom, September 16 at 11:30 am Eastern.
